Slurry and overflow pumps run across mining, non-ferrous smelting and oil & gas. Wear is the largest hidden cost on this duty — and it is a drive problem as much as a hydraulic one.

Fine abrasives destroy pumps quickly

Operators running small slurry pumps in development headings report pumps worn out within months by fine particulates such as dolomite dust. Running the pump at fixed speed regardless of duty accelerates it: every start is full hydraulic shock, and every hour above the required flow is extra abrasive passing the impeller.

Measured result

An aluminium producer converted slurry and overflow pumps to TYP series high-efficiency permanent-magnet synchronous motors. Measured energy saving was 18%–22%, and variable-speed operation reduced wear from hydraulic shock, extending impeller life.
