What actually decides a motor purchase on a mine site
Availability outranks specification
On a remote site the best motor is frequently just the one that is in stock. Downtime cost dominates, and lead time decides more purchases than the efficiency figure on the datasheet does.
Slurry pump wear is a continuous cost
Fine abrasive particles β dolomite dust and similar β can destroy a pump within months. Abrasive wear is the largest hidden cost on slurry and overflow pump duty, and it is a drive problem as much as a hydraulic one.
Overheating is the leading failure mode
High ambient temperature, dust-blocked cooling fins and sustained overload. Overheating accounts for the largest share of reported failures, and the root cause is frequently a mismatch between motor rating and actual load rather than the motor itself.
Dust drives bearing replacement cycles
Across conveyors, crushers, vibrating feeders, screens and dust collection equipment, bearing replacement intervals cluster around three years on dusty sites. Ingress is the primary driver, which makes sealing specification a first-order decision.

Aluminium producer: slurry and overflow pump conversion
TYP series high-efficiency permanent-magnet synchronous motors replaced the existing induction drives on slurry and overflow pumps. Measured energy saving after conversion was 18%β22%. Variable-speed operation also reduced impeller wear from hydraulic shock, lengthening the maintenance interval.
