Kiln Drive

The rotary kiln is the heart of clinker production โ€” a steel cylinder 3โ€“8 m in diameter and 50โ€“250 m long, refractory lined, inclined 2โ€“5 degrees, turning at 1โ€“4 rpm, with material sintering inside at around 1450 ยฐC.

Why the drive is a hard specification

Very low speed, very high inertia, and a load that must never stop turning while the kiln is hot. A typical conversion replaces a 315 kW DC motor with an AC machine and drive โ€” and the difficult part is not matching rated power but reproducing the torque behaviour at 1โ€“4 rpm, including the ability to hold and inch the kiln during maintenance.
