YDT Series Pole-Changing Multi-Speed Motor for Fans and Pumps

A pole-changing multi-speed motor whose power split at each speed is designed around the fan and pump flow law — which is where the energy saving actually comes from.

YDT pole-changing multi-speed motor for fan and pump duty

YDT changes speed by switching the winding connection, in two-speed and three-speed single-winding versions. What separates it from the general-purpose YD series is how the power is apportioned between the speeds: it follows the proportional relationship between flow and speed in fans and pumps.

That matters because fan and pump power falls roughly with the cube of speed. A machine sized so that its low-speed rating matches what the fan actually needs at low speed is a much better fit than one carrying full-speed capability it will never use down there.

It suits continuously running fans and pumps whose duty varies periodically — the seasonal and temperature-driven airflow changes common in mining, metallurgy, textiles, chemical plant, light industry and building services.

Selection guide

Fan and pump power falls roughly with the cube of speed. Dropping to the low speed for the part of the year that does not need full flow is a large reduction, and a pole-changing motor achieves it without a drive.
If two or three flow settings cover the year, YDT is simpler and cheaper and puts no harmonics on the supply. If the process wants continuous trimming to a setpoint, a drive with YVP or TYP will hold it more closely and save more.
The flow and head at each operating point, and how many hours a year the plant spends at each. Those hours are what decide whether the multi-speed machine or the drive is the better economics.
