YD Series

YD Series Pole-Changing Multi-Speed Three-Phase Induction Motor

Stepped speed change by switching the winding connection — two-speed and three-speed machines with no drive, no electronics and nothing to fail.

Pole-changing multi-speed three-phase induction motor

YD changes speed and power by changing how the winding is connected. It is a stepped-speed machine, not a stepless one: a single winding pole-changing design, built in two-speed and three-speed versions.

The appeal is what it does not have. There is no drive, no DC link, no harmonics on the supply and no drive cabinet to keep cool — which on a simple two-speed duty makes it simpler, smaller, quieter and considerably cheaper than a variable-frequency solution.

It is not for fans and pumps. Those follow a flow-versus-speed relationship that needs the power split designed around it, which is what the companion YDT series does. YD is for the general case: machinery that needs a high speed and a low speed and does not care about the curve in between.

  • Machinery needing stepped speed change — machine tools, hoists, mixers, material handling
  • Applications where a drive is unwanted for cost, harmonics or maintenance reasons

Selection guide

YDT is designed for fans and pumps, where power at each speed is apportioned to the flow-versus-speed relationship. YD is explicitly not for that duty. Pick by what you are driving, not by frame size.
If the process genuinely needs two or three fixed speeds, a pole-changing motor does it with no drive, no harmonics and no cabinet. If it needs a continuously adjustable speed, or soft starting, or torque control, you want a drive and a YVP or TYP machine.
The speeds you need and the load torque at each one. On a pole-changing machine the available power is not the same at both speeds, so a rating that works at high speed may not at low.
