Explosion Proof Motor (Flameproof, Ex d)

Definition

An explosion proof motor is a motor whose enclosure is constructed and certified to withstand an explosion occurring inside it and to prevent the resulting flame from igniting the explosive atmosphere surrounding the machine.

Read that definition once more, because the name misleads almost everyone: the enclosure does not stop an explosion happening inside the motor. It assumes one will, and is built to contain it.

Containment is achieved through the geometry of the joints. Gas escaping through a long, narrow, precisely machined gap is cooled below the ignition temperature of the surrounding atmosphere on its way out. That is why the machining stage of a flameproof motor is part of the protection rather than part of the finish.

Why the five segments cannot be traded against each other

A marking such as Ex db IIB T4 Gb answers five separate questions: is it Ex equipment, how is ignition prevented, which gases, how hot may the surface get, and under which faults does the protection hold. Each segment has to match the installation independently.

A machine with a higher subgroup does not compensate for a lower temperature class, and a higher protection level does not compensate for the wrong subgroup. Specifying "explosion proof" without the full marking is specifying almost nothing.

Gas and dust are not the same protection

Flameproof protection "d" contains an explosion. Dust ignition protection "t" works the other way round: the enclosure limits the ingress of dust and limits its own surface temperature so that a dust layer cannot be ignited.

They are different constructions certified to different parts of the standard. A machine certified Ex db for gas is not thereby certified Ex tb for dust, and the reverse is equally true.

Common misreadings

What Explosion Proof Motor does not tell you

It does not prevent an explosion inside the motor

It contains one. The design assumes the internal atmosphere can ignite and makes sure the flame cannot get out at a temperature that would ignite the surroundings.

It is not a stronger version of TEFC

A totally enclosed frame is a cooling arrangement. A flameproof enclosure is a certified protection concept with defined joint gaps, joint lengths, fastener grades and a certificate number. No amount of enclosure makes a machine flameproof.

IIB and IIC are not grades of the same thing

They name which gases the machine has been tested against. A IIB machine installed where hydrogen or acetylene can be present is uncertified for that atmosphere, whatever else the nameplate says.

The certificate belongs to a type, not to a family name

Series names are marketing groupings; certificates are issued against defined constructions and ratings. Ask for the certificate number that covers the specific rating being quoted.

Choosing the zone is not the manufacturer’s job

Area classification is carried out by the user or the plant designer, and the equipment is then selected to match it. A supplier who tells you which zone your plant is in is answering a question they cannot answer.

What is an explosion proof motor?

A motor whose enclosure is built and certified to contain an explosion happening inside it, so that the flame cannot ignite the explosive atmosphere around the machine. The containment works through long, narrow, precisely machined joints that cool escaping gas below the ignition temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.

Does an explosion proof motor prevent explosions?

Not inside itself. This is the most consequential misreading of the term. The design assumes the atmosphere inside the enclosure can ignite, and is built so that the resulting flame and pressure stay contained. What it prevents is the ignition of the atmosphere outside.

What does Ex db IIB T4 Gb mean?

Five separate statements. Ex: it is certified explosion-protected equipment. db: the protection is a flameproof enclosure at level b. IIB: it is certified for gas subgroup IIB, with ethylene as the representative gas. T4: the surface will not exceed 135 °C. Gb: the protection holds in normal operation and under expected faults. Each segment must match the installation on its own.

Is an explosion proof motor the same as a dust ignition proof motor?

No. Flameproof protection "d" contains an internal explosion; dust ignition protection "t" limits dust ingress and surface temperature so a dust layer cannot ignite. They are different constructions certified under different parts of the standard, and one does not imply the other.

Who decides which zone my equipment is in?

The user or the plant designer. Area classification depends on what is present, how often, and in what quantity — none of which a motor manufacturer can know. The manufacturer certifies equipment against a defined protection concept; matching that to the classified area is the buyer’s side of the boundary.
